I will almost always opt for the Z field. The amount of work needed to
create zfields is offset by the amount of testing required to repurpose
existing fields. Plus with zfields you have fewer risks when you apply
service packs or upgrades. I saw a situation where a client had repurposed a
field and it tested just fine but they got hosed later when a SP fixed a bug
in a program that impacted their operation using this field. Plus if they do
go to FSCM I think the custom field would be easier to migrate or append to
one of the new tables.

General Opinions please? If your client wants to use a field that is not
available in SAP (for example, my client wants a 2 digit field for Customer
Dispute Code, but are not using FSCM yet). So, we can either re-purpose an
existing field from BSID/BSAD/BSEG at the Customer Line item level, or
append a Z Field to the tables.

I think there are pluses and minuses to both approaches. Using an SAP Field
for something other than it was intended to be used for is always a risk.
There may be function modules or programs that will read it and do something
based upon the value. Of course, you must just test the hell out of the
field to prevent this.

Adding a Z field can be a lot of work and it adds complexity to the system,
but at least you have no concern about what other uses it has and that it
may be overwritten.

Other opinions?
