Can I ask, why do you want to keep the old asset number? What is the business requirement here?

Thanks Kristine....cannot use this method as my numbers are already set
as externally assigned.

Try if its possible to change number range of 2nd asset to externally
assign. Then if the desired asset number already exists, you can now
change back to number range internally assigned.
