Hi Simon

Why do you feel the need to change the compress_cmd and uncompress_cmd
parameters?
I have never needed to do that in any of my systems and the compression is
working just fine on all platforms.

Regards,
LEH

Subject: [sap-basis] Problem with compression of backups, SAP running on
Windows

Hi.
I am having a problem with the compression settings for backups and redo log
backups. Compression is set as specified in the help provided by SAP -
dollar signs as placemarkers for the source and target files, double quotes
used. The settings are also the same as for my other SAP systems running on
UNIX platforms, compression works fine on these systems.
Within the init<SID>.sap file I have altered the relevant entries as such:
compress = yes
compress_cmd = "compress -c $ > $"
uncompress_cmd = "uncompress -c $ > $"
When the backup or a redo log backup runs I get the following error
messages:
BR0278E Command output of 'compress -c
S:\ORACLE\XID\SAPDATA1\PERFSTAT_1\PERFSTAT.DATA1 >
\\w2tmscs06\n$\oracle\XID\sapbackup\beaxmqok\PERFSTAT.DATA1.Z':
'compress' is not recognized as an internal or external command,operable
program or batch file.
BR0279E Return code from 'compress -c
S:\ORACLE\XID\SAPDATA1\PERFSTAT_1\PERFSTAT.DATA1 >
\\w2tmscs06\n$\oracle\XID\sapbackup\beaxmqok\PERFSTAT.DATA1.Z': 1
BR0224E Compressing S:\ORACLE\XID\SAPDATA1\PERFSTAT_1\PERFSTAT.DATA1 to
\\w2tmscs06\n$\oracle\XID\sapbackup\beaxmqok\PERFSTAT.DATA1.Z failed due to
previous errors
It looks like the compress program can not be found.... I can't seem to find
a specific compress program on my UNIX systems.
When I use the
compress = only
command to collect statistics for compression this runs correctly to
completion.
Any ideas what the problem might be? Am I missing a compression program?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Simon.
