It is advisable that you do the FSV through Development as the same is tested & further always make a copy of production client as your development client.

Depends on number of people in your organization.
I now work for a midsize company and we only maintain production, but we do
download it keep in a special folder on the companys shared drive.

Hi ,
I had done this successfully to a client in Birmingham, what i have on the
top of my mind is i followed the sap note to make the customisable object
in to the user-definable object , also taken the help from the security and
abap consultant.
Please search for the relevant sap note for the developments as i dont have
the my database with me right now to suggest you.
