[sap-log-sd] Order Combination, but only for specific plants / shipping points

This one's a gem so any help or ideas very gratefully received.
I have a business requirement for order combination, so I've set the Order Combination flag on the customer master and removed the copy item number flag on copy control for deliveries (LF) from sales Order (OR) at Header level, and this does what it should, and combines the deliveries.
However, the requirement is only for SAP Controlled warehouses and delivering plants, and not for the plants and warehouses managed by 3rd party applications.
In addition the integration between SAP and the 3rd party systems requires that the original sales order line item is maintained in the deliveries for these plants / shipping points.
My proposed solution is to unset the order combination flag for the sales order line items for the 3rd party managed plants in the user exit sales order save, and during delivery creation for these plants use a user exit to copy the sales order line item details in to the delivery documents for these plants / shipping points.
Has anyone got any better ideas or faced and resolved a similar situation?
