* is not storing the PO text in the PO. It is only referencing real time the PO text in the material master. You have to adopt the text if you want the text to be stored on the document (item/Texts/Adopt text). In theory you want blank but it has some limitations (read OSS note # 27136). Try N; it does not allow to be changed in teh document.
