[sap-srm] SRM 7/NW 7.01 error creating Business Partner:Employee

We are re-implementing SRM with SRM 7/NW 7.01 on AIX/Oracle. We have applied SPS 5 to the ABAP and JAVA stacks. We have SRM-MDM on the same server as our JAVA stack.
When trying to "Create Employee with Reference" or create a new Business Partner: Employee using the SRM Portal, we are receiving an error "A fatal error occured in the PD Layer. The transaction needs to be terminated. "
There are no short dumps, and no entries in any log on the portal.
Maybe we're missing something in configuration? We had previously implemented SRM 4.0 with Server 5.0. The configuration was completely different. Has anyone hit this problem with SRM 7.0?
