In order to get enough lead time for make-to-order or assemble-to-order mareials where we place the order at a Distribution Center plant and then transfer the requirement to our manufacturing plant, we did a little custom coding.
We added a field to MARC called CUSTOMER ORDER LEAD TIME. In it, we populated the lead time that we would need to procure components, build the product and transport it from manufacturing to distribution. The planned delivery time between plants was entered as 2 days, our normal transport time. At the manufacturing plant you would have defined your in-house oproduction time so that you would be able to set the start and end dates for your manufactuing order(s) and the due dates for any procured materials.
We then created a D-chain value for the material at the prpoper sales org. When a customer placed an order, we used the D-chain value to point us to the CUSTOMER ORDER LEAD TIME value which we then used to determine the ship date of the customer order. In other words, we told the customer when we would ship his order having taken into consideration the time it would take us to procure the components and perform the necessary manufacturing work.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
