Thanks to Manuel, Shannon and Martin for all the responses!
I very quickly came to the conclusion that an interim status would be the wrong way to go, after receiving Manuel's first response, and then after a brief phone call with another colleqgue.
The ultimate solution has been to use a custom field. The notion of creating a 2-step approval was also considered, but we discounted that because of other structural considerations.
