The answer above dealing with Domains is on the money. SAP normally aligns the selection screen fields with the DB fields, so that they have the same characteristics. What table are you trying to look at? Do you get the same issue when using SE16N? You may also want to check your SE16 values under settings->user parameters. You could be getting caught up in a conversion exit, so you may want to ensure that box is unchecked.
