You can have an Operating concern and in case you are in ECC 6.0 version then it would be better useful to define the Profit centers and Segments. in financial accounting and also Assing Profit centers to Cost centers. and Group the profit centers so that it would be useful for COPA.
Its is better to use the Costing based COPA.
- Define the profitability segments
and the Characteristics can be
- Products
- Customers
- Regions ( This can be derived)
- Business ( different business lines in a Trading Business)
This can be assigned in COPA and assessment cycles can be defined for the same
Further to capture the Product groups you can define it in the Material master . Sales org view 2 where you have material group 1 2 and 3
this can be captured in the Sales document
The Cost can be assessed at the month end using assessment cycles in COPA.
Reports can be generated through Report painter
The only issue is COPA is resource hungry so you should try to check if you can summarize the COPA document.
Through the above you can capture the profitability of the Trading operations.

If you want to calculate costs without PP Module it is very much possible
There are two ways one you can do the cost planning using Statistical key figures using t code Kp46
and also using Kp26 with activity type then you can plan the costs using KP06 with activity type and SKF
Now instead of creating the Production order or Process order you can use the option CO production order
t cod eKKF1
then use KKF2 to update the details of costs you need to create one order type
Month end run the assessment cycles using KSu5 and also update the actual Statistical key figure and then calculat ethe actual activity price and SKF
use t code KBK6
and after executing assessment cycles and distribution cycles you can also calculate actual cost through KSII
Run the Standard cost estimate without quantity structure using t code
KKPAN
KKPBN
Hope this would suffice
