We also tried an industrial level browser but that only shaved of 1-2sec, it was still too slow compared to the legacy systems we are replacing with SAP. For manufacturing/shipping/recieve/JIT facilities, ITS was just to slow now matter what we did to it or the device. Looks weren't important, performance was critical.
It also added an additional expense since that industrial browser wasn't incuded with the Symbol/Moto devices.
You are correct about the middleware/telnet server issue. That is definately a drawback of using SAPConsole since it adds another point of failure and that was a "step backwards" from what our legacy systems supported natively.
