They can surely not fix the problem, that you currently have with your existing material data (which were created in a wrong way), but they can setup separate number ranges containing your number styles in an alphanumerical way. The same problem should exist when you enter the material number manually: you always have to enter the leading zeros, the users acceptance for that might be very poor. Try it out manually creating a material master - if it works without the leading zeros, then it should also do by any automatically input like Batch etc., if not - then it's easy for you to tell the MM people to set it up right and do their work - hence no coworker will like to constantly count "0" entering a material number.
