[sap-acct] Risks vs Benefits of getting back to 1 Controlling area and operating concern

We currently have two Controlling areas and Operating concerns, as we introduced a company to our group that was operating a different fiscal year variant.
Problem we have now is we are about to introduce another company that shares the same fiscal variant and currency as one of the current controlling areas. The logical thing to do seems to be to add the new (3rd) company to the operating concern with the same fiscal variant. and they also share the same currency.....however we are getting challenge that we should be trying to get to one controlling area.
Does anyone know the benefits Vs risks of doing that?
Massively appreciated if you can help.
