In Customizing you can setup the properties of the Material-Number. Guess your settings there is shorter then the number you're trying to convert. Did you check that? Try using the Function in Test mode with the number you want to convert. Maybe it's the headerline of the File you're trying to process, and there might be a Line with "MATERIAL-NUMBER" ;)
