This is an old argument, and I have had experience in environments doing it each way (allow negative balances or do not). Analyze your material flow and its speed. Do you backflush or issue the components? The more backflushing and the faster the movement, the more likely you are to need to be able to go negative and clean it up after. The alternative is to manage COGI's (blocked transactions) all the time. If your material management discipline and/or those points do not apply (backflushing, fast flow) maybe you shouldn't. Personally, I much prefered letting it go negative and fixing the negatives just because it is simpler than managing COGIs but our specific environment and material management discipline (and lack thereof) are the reason. If you don't fix them ASAP, you create other problems. Keep an open mind and look at your factory floor and past history. A locked stockroom does a hell of a lot more for your inventory issues than an artificial constraint in SAP.
