I usually leave autoextend option ON even if it filled to its maximum size. This is more lazyness than anything else.
Thins being said, I would decrease the max_size to a much smaller value, like 3GB. Then you must device what to do from these options:
1. move datafile on other disk/partition (needs downtime)
2. create a new datafile on another disk
3. extend disk space on this disk/partition (easy to do if this is on a SAN)
I prefer option 3, then 2 and finally, 1.
