Tom -- You may be trying to cover a little more ground than can be managed with a couple of forum messages. If you want to inspect a production order, then you'll need inspection characteristics on a routing or reference operation set. If you don't want to put insp chars on a routing, then you'll need a material specification. Either way, you have to be sure to set up the material master QM data properly. If you're willing to inspect something "outside" the production order, then there are ways of generating inspection lots "on the fly" but that's not actually an inspection of the production order.
The older SAP QM for production orders help (for release 4.6) might prove more useful than the current 6.0 help. Sometimes, the older SAP documentation is more informative. Here's a link:
http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/en/data/pdf/QMPROD/QMPROD.pdf.
Good luck,
Carl
