Hi, Alexis -

I'd like to know what the issues are around the faulty installation, especially regarding the way the Controlling module was set up. Budgeting is usually at a cost center/profit center level, among other things like orders, projects, etc. The budget reporting out of SAP for those modules is excellent. The drill-down capability in SAP is not achievable in an Access database, and how do you provide proper actual vs. budget reporting otherwise? Please don't say it's all dumped to an Access database! I would be concerned about security, especially if there is actual data in this database. Can that actual data get outside the company? Can it be manipulated? Would your company be okay if that happened?

How do all the business unit heads get their actual vs. budget reporting? Can they get into this database? Can they manipulate their actual data so that it looks better vs. budget? Again, I would think security is an issue here.

I suspect this manager did not know enough about SAP to work around the faults and knows Access very well. I echo the sentiments of Paul and Jagan. This manager doesn't even have to leave the company; all he/she needs is a new position without responsibility to this Access world and everyone else will be out in the cold. This amounts to an end-user developed database, which nobody in the IT world would condone for this level of application.

Even a bad installation of SAP is better than Access databases.

Subject: Microsoft Access vs. SAP for Budgeting Purposes

Hi experts,

The company I work for has experienced and is currently working with a really faulty implementation of SAP. (Going on for about 6 years!)

That being said they do not do their budgeting in SAP. A manager has come on board and has literally created this huge access file that basically is an ERP system. I am trying to build a case to go against using Access. I would like to encourage investing the resources to use SAP, the way it should be used. Can anyone please provide some points arguing this point? What are the disadvantages of using Access given that there is no SQL server either?

Please let me know if my question is clear enough.

Thanks,

Alexis
