Terry,

I don't know if we can call it a trend, but here we focus our development
on ABAP OO. Reusability at 100% avoid coding the same thing twice.
Program used to be hundreds of line of code and now they are just a couple.
Notice that things evolved so rapidly that maybe we are already out.

Every business needs (or utility needs) are wrapped into business class and
model class.

Use of ALV classes, WD4A (Web Dynpro for ABAP), Adobe Interactive forms
and Adobe Forms.

Use of RFC and BAPI in some cases. All the business logic is stored in
SAP, but the front-end maybe something else ( .NET, Excel...).

Use of Connectors (JAVA and .NET) for rare specific needs.

Use of Native SQL encapsulated in classes. When comes time to communicate
in real time with other Databases than the SAP one. This way, no need of
third party communication software(less layer means less support). Has an
example, our CMS (Convoyer Manager System) uses a different DB than SAP.
We need to interchange data real-time between the CMS and SAP. All data
interchange to or from SAP are methods of a class. So when a user create
an HU (handling unit) the CMS has it too. Progammers don't need to
understand all under the class, just use it.

I would be interested to have a copy of your presentation.

Pierre

Subject: Trends in SAP Development

Esteemed Toolbox Colleagues,

I will be giving a guest lecture to an "Advanced ERP" class at our local university in a couple of weeks, and I want to include a segment on "Trends in SAP Development."
Now, it's easy to see the trends that SAP's marketing machine wants us to see, but I want to get a better idea about the "real world" trends that are shaping up at real-world companies.
So, what trends do you see shaping up at your company?

Cheers,
TerryB
