I know you said you wanted to use a painter, but with painter, there's no way to get any variability in your output - you have to name every column. New cost center means report maintenance. If you use a Report Writer, you can avoid that by using a set as the columns. You will still hit some kind of limit to the number of columns, but I did a quick proof of concept with a set with 29 cost centers, and it worked without issue. The column set has to be a data set, so create a key figure set and add that to a new multi-set with the cost center set and the key figure set together. Use that multi-set in the column set.
