Are you able to find the message number? It's normally in the error notice, or you may need to select more information.
My best guess is that the workflow is looking for something and not finding it, causing the error.
Past the message number giving us something pointing to a root cause, I'd recommend a trace, preferably when you have replicated the error in a test system.
You can engage SAP through an incident. They will require that all the custom code be disabled. Again, best in a test system.
