Features are used in a program. Only if the IT1 maintenance pgm MP000100 calls the feature CONTR, you can use the same feature. Get an ABAP programmer to check if any feature used for contract type in IT 1. I don't think there is any.
Also please note these two contract type fields are used for different purposes and they do not mean the same.
See if you can get ab ABAP pgm'r find a user exit or bAPI to add code in MP000100 to use a custom feature to obtain the default contract type, Or if you can find a routine or form where an ABAP enhancement can be used. Then you can copy CONTR to a Z* feature and modify as per the business rules; this feature needs to be used in you ABAP code.
