What the suggestion from my side is simply to consult the BI people who
prepare a repot from the production server on a monthly basis, so from there
you can get the missed document numbers & there category. This is one of the
reason that we do not opt for deleting a sales order or any other document
but reject a document with stating a cause for that rejection so that the
number of the document will be available while the report preparation from
where we can get the details.

One situation in which you have to watch out for missing numbers would be if you do business in a locale that requires you to account for every document - such as in Mexico (or at least so I have been told by our office there). You may want to shut off the buffering if this is really an issue. If you have multiple servers you can not only lose a lot of numbers, but you can also get them assigned out of sequence (number 1 the day after number 2, for example).
