Hello colleagues,
just stumbled upon this thread - a bit late perhaps. Let me add: anyone who wants to discuss SAP Solution Manager Diagnostics (SMD) 'installation' options, best practices, etc. let me invite to the SAP Solution Manager group, too.
Conclusion confirmed. I a nutshell, as outlined in SAP Solution Manager (Diagnostics) guides (and hopefully in the SAP Netweaver Solution Operations Guide...), the SMD Agent is 'serving' a host (virtual or physical) (this is what you observed in the MMC...), and its configuration for the technical systems (or managed systems) (one might say instances...) on this host is indeed performed via SAP Solution Manager Diagnostics 'Managed System Setup and Configuration' (mostly centrally from within SAP Solution Manager Diagnostics 'server' application) - after the installation etc. of the managed system/application. It has been said in this thread already, this includes settings required on the managed system side, e.g. certain values for CA Wily Introscope properties/parameters.
Remark: Exceptions to this general 'rule/procedure' are described in SAP Notes, i.e. some SAP software products will require additional and manual steps to setup and configure 'SMD' for.
