I too am relatively new SAP user with little formal and much on the job training. I have experienced some success by double clicking on error messages. Sometimes additional information will be provided for the error.
We use transaction CATA which will allow time transfer to various components including HR and CO. I do not believe this transaction will help until the error is cleared and your time is released. Have you checked in CATS_DA to see the status of the time? Hope some of this helps.
