I suggest you take a look at SAP's older functionality to load results from an external source. We use the function modules found in function group QIRF (program SAPLQIRF). If you display one of the functions and print the Function Module Documentation it isn't too bad.
We took a look at a couple of the BAPI's when they came out (release 4.5? not sure) and we found a couple of cases where the BAPI's failed to load data that were were able to load using native SAP (transaction QE51 or QE51N) and our existing QIRF-based applications. For example, the BAPI's failed on production orders that used parallel or alternate routing sequences. We sent a couple of messages to SAP about the problems, but they responded they weren't going to change anything. Since we were having success with our existing programs that used the QIRF functions we didn't pursue the BAPI problems.
You should experiment a lot with these functions. We used the SE37 transaction to enter (and save) test data so we could see the impact of various data combinations.
We only use the QIRF_GET_ORIGINAL_VALUES2, QIRF_INSP_POINT2, and
QIRF_GET_SAMPLE_VALUES2 functions (these functions call some of the other QIRF functions), but some of the other functions may prove useful to you, too.
