Yes, I think one actually can use G-mail as the SMTP server.
SMTP/POP3 settings are described here:

Don't get me wrong - I've certainly never tried to do it - but I do
think it would work (it will work conceptually, assuming the SMTP/POP3
info is accurate, but as I say I've never tried).
Sadiqiqbal: This is really NOT a 'good' idea. In my opinion, it's much
better to go get an open source SMTP server and run it yourself on some
leftover hardware if you require 'low cost'. Email becomes a legal
issue for a company - make REAL sure that your company's legal experts
are OK with that semi-public G-mail technical solution. Seriously!

Hi,
You can't link your SAP system to gmail and for gmail to act as your
SMTP server. Your company needs its own SMTP mail server.
