Thank you for all your replies. After rebooting the system and restarting the process from scratch it all worked.
As far as the SAPTRANSHOSTS is concerned, I had already set it to the same IP address as the host.
It's incredibly frustrating because problem has gone but I don't know why.

I'm in the middle of a system copy and the system copy fails during the process
"Perform table depooling (RUTPOADAPT)" while running RADDBDIF

It complains that :
Running report RADDBDIF failed. DIAGNOSIS: The application server running under account ecdadm could not write to directory /usr/sap/trans/tmp. SOLUTION: Correct the problem and choose OK.
However , when I :
$ pwd
/usr/sap/trans/tmp
$ ls -la
total 4
drwxrwx--- 2 ecdadm sapsys 512 May 10 07:54 .
drwxrwxr-x 20 ecdadm sapsys 512 May 10 07:54 ..
$ id
uid=102(ecdadm) gid=100(sapsys)
$ touch zz
$ ls -la
total 4
drwxrwx--- 2 ecdadm sapsys 512 May 11 17:52 .
drwxrwxr-x 20 ecdadm sapsys 512 May 10 07:54 ..

It writes perfectly.. Please advise
