Good morning,

Very good explanation of the PERNR field and how to configure and helpful even to someone familiar with the system.

To the original question -logical meaning of the PERNR. The logic behind the number should be specific to your organization and what was selected for number ranges during the original configuration. In our legacy system we had 3 character numeric personnel numbers (PERNR) so we converted all existing employees with the assigned number. We then had the system start with four characters and start at 1300 for a clear break between pre-sap and post-sap assignment of numbers.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Subject: Meaning of PERNR (Personnel Number)

Hi.

PERNR is employee number (look at any of the PA tables (e.g. PA0000, PA0001, PA0002, etc. and PERNR is one of the key fields in each of these tables.

In the configuration when you set up your system you could have chosen to assign employee numbers yourself, have the system generate and assign the number or a combination of both.

In some instances if an employee terminates and then is rehired the system will assign the employee a new employee number (the next one available) and you can link the multiple employee numbers for an individual together so as to get a true picture of an employee's history at your company.

** we don't use that approach - when we rehire an employee we perform the rehire action against the employee number the employee had when he/she left.

Look in the IMG to see how the numbering is being controlled and pay attention to the first number you had the system begin with when it started assigning employee numbers.

? Menu path is ? IMG-> Personnel management-> Personnel Administration -> Basic settings->Maintain number range intervals for personnel numbers
Or use transaction code PA04

Click on the display intervals box and the number in the column labeled NT Status (this is number range status) should be the last employee number the system has assigned.

Hope this helps.
