Thank you for your response.
I created the RE with ref to F2. The main item has item cat REN, the free item has RENN. Quantities are copied from F2. RENN quantity is greyed out.
Supposing my invoice has these quantities: (inclusive)
Main item 10
Free item 2
And I raised a sales return with ref to invoice, the quantities are copied from F2.
return order main item 10
free item 5
I will change the main item quantity from 10 to 5. but the free item quantity does not get recalculated to 1.
I know that in standard SAP, free goods determination is only set up for standard order types.
I would like to implement it in some returns types via enhancement. don't know how yet.

Not sure I am following your query correctly but I think you just need to change the item category on the return order to that of free goods then recalculation will be done
