On the reusable code side. OO is not the only reusable code. We have many
reusable includes and FM's. In older installations, it is hard to sell OO
when an FM solution already exists. Retro fitting to OO is more trouble
than it is worth. In other words, OO is a super trend for newer
installations, but maybe not so for older.

Subject: Trends in SAP Development

Good topic Terry,

In addition to what Pierre hit on, I would like to add Enterprise and Service Oriented Architecture to the trend list. Our company performs extremely wide and diverse roles in the community. We control the State's aquaduct and levy system, buy and sell power, deliver water, provide weather data, provide seismic data, controls dams, environment monitoring, etc.

So, we have a large demand for controlled interfaces to external systems both within and outside of our department. Whether it is to controlling entities, Bond management, document management, GIS, Adobe services, fuel management systems, chemical analysis, reporting systems, yada yada yada, EA & SOA are revolutionizing how we exchange data to and from SAP. It's allowing us to better manage our resources and development demands by focusing on web services rather than entire business solutions that could be best served by other products. For example, let ESRI handle all of the mapping functionality, while we simply feed the data layers through services.

My older ABAP developers are slower to embrace the OO concepts but we are also pushing forward in the areas Pierre mentioned and are now seeing greater use of reusable object components and overall improved development times. Training, training, training...

We are also getting a strong push like everyone else to bring functionality to mobile devices. So that's high on our trend list.

Cheers!
Scott Bains-Jordan
