Thanks Greg. This is exactly what I had in mind, but did not know if it was
possible to have a plan version that has objects with historical start dates.
Will ask further questions if I encounter issues.

You could build the correct org structure in a different plan version and then activate it. Then you will need to run the integration programs and check the it 3 as has suggested. You should test it completely in a copy of your prod system.
