Do you have multiple applications servers? This sounds like a situation where you have multiple application servers and buffering of the material document number range. Basically each app server pulls a range of numbers into the buffer and uses those numbers one by one when creating material documents. Each application server will have a different set of numbers so they will not actually be sequential across the system. For example app server 1 pulls 10 numbers into its buffer which are numbers 1 to 10. App server 2 pulls in numbers 11 to 20. If app server 2 performs a goods movement it will be given the first number in its buffer which is 11. Then when app server 1 performs a goods movement it will be give the first number in its buffer which is 1. Therefore material document number 1 was actually created AFTER material document number 11. If it is critical that you have sequential numbering then you should ask your basis team to switch off buffering of the material document number range, but this could have an impact on the system performance depending on how frequently goods movements are posted in your system.
