Wow, I sure must be off base - I always thought that &NC& was like ' ', and different from * . And, being the trouble maker that I am, how do you put Dummy inti a field that is less than 5 characters long?? Thanks Jim Wells

I concur with Henrik. There are exceptions where ' ' is required,
there are also exceptions where * is evaluated as a literal and will
not satisfy the check.
