Hi,

It's true that performing the oracle upgrade prior to the SAP upgrade won't save you too much time, but it could save you a lot of headache if problem arise during the upgrade.
If you perform these tasks seperately, pin pointing the root cause of any errors will be less complex. So you should really do the DB upgrade a few weeks before the SAP upgrade. This way you will expose any errors related to the DB upgrade before the SAP upgrade is started.

LEH

Thanks for the info.

We don't have any immediate requirements for EhP4, but it is difficult to get downtime windows so the current thought is to get it all done at once if we can keep it in a compressed window.

Upgrading Oracle prior does sound like a good idea, but we don't believe it will save us more than 2 - 4 hours at the most as we have that process scripted well with some custom shell scripts.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

When planning the upgrade, you should perform the upgrade a number of times on Sandbox systems this will assist in finding all the pitfalls and allows the developers to know what SPDD and SPAU changes are required. These tests will also allow you to have a good idea how long the upgrade will take and the time between upgrading the DEV to Upgrading PRD can be much shorter and reduce any development freeze.

You would be better off upgrading Oracle before the upgrade. Do you have an immediate requirement for EhP4? You can perform this test on the sandbox.

It will b e good to hear what others think.

Regards

Hello SAP Basis group,

My company is currently preparing for an upgrade from ECC 5 to ECC 6 and are having some lively discussions on if to install EHP4 at the same time or put this off to another date. The reason we are questioning this is due to the amount of downtime required considering we run operations world wide 24x7.

Some facts about our environment:

ECC 5 running on Linux currently with Oracle 9i.
ESS/MSS running on a Java 6.40 stack
Internal SAP Portal running on 7.0
External Portal running on 7.0 to support ISA and custom supplier/customer portals.
BI 7.0

We have completed an upgrade to ECC6 with and without EHP4 as a test, but we have yet to understand the cutover weekend requirements for the additional systems. My questions are:

How many have completed an upgrade to ECC6 with EHP4 and how long was your downtime window? Did you have a fairly straight forward environment or was it complex?
What are the pitfalls of doing EHP4 during the same upgrade or doing it as a follow up activity?
We also need to upgrade to Oracle 10g, should this be done at the same time or should we move this up in the schedule?

I appreciate any advice or insight you may have.

Thanks,
Dan Hedstrom
