SAP Library - Find your answers

Just chiming in, In most shops auto-extend is turned on but is not fully used. It is there to prevent issues such as those that you have been illustrating-large jobs, off peak, etc. What is used, is a combination of AE and a qualified database Administrator who is carefully managing the database and controlling the file management and keeping a watchful eye on the environment---meaning adding disks pro-actively, extending tablespaces pro-actively and keeping the database fine-tuned. Auto-extend is the DB Admins insurance policy, set to assure that the database will not fail.

I think we're going a bit off-topic here now.
Fair, the auto-extend may not have been configured correctly. All I know
is that a couple of weeks after I started in this position it caused the
database disks to fill. From then on, we were asked by management to
manually extend table spaces. We never looked at configuring auto-extend
correctly as we migrated to SQL Server shortly afterwards.

But what did you do manually different to what Oracle would have done
for
you?
As I think you confirmed in another message your configuration was wrong
if it filled the system to the point where you had to reorg.
From the description below sounds like there were some very inefficient
jobs that needed correction - I'm unclear as to how this justifies not
using a useful feature of the database.
My gripe with blaming autoextend for failure is its not autoextends
fault
- root cause is always something else and its better to resolve that
than
turn off (correctly configured) autoextend??

We had it a couple of times last year where the PSAPBTABD table space
auto extended by 35Gb the first time and 40Gb the second, both times
using all the remaining space left in the database and bearing in mind
our database is only about 250Gb, I'd say that is quite a lot. We no
longer allow auto-extending and do it all manually.
I'm merely passing on recommendations from experience.

And what sort of "knack" is that?
Oracle will only use space it needs based on what transactions the
application is generating.
If you don't have autoextend on and have a very active database all you
are going to end up doing is manually extending anyway?
There is no 'random' useage of tablespace by Oracle. The only benefit of
manual extension I can see is you might see a rogue application process
sooner than the autoextend limit.
Having said that at our shop they also refuse to turn on autoextend but
have yet to provide a good argument for why not - unfortunately they are
in control of the setting!

While I agree with Lars-Erik, I would not really recommend allowing
table spaces in Oracle to auto-extend as they have a knack of just
extending and filling the entire database leaving no space at all, thus
bringing your system down.

Hi,
It means that the tablespace can currently grow 50GB without you
extending
it at all. The data files are set to auto extend and will extend
themselves
until they reach the auto extend limit.
However, you may extend the data files or add new data files now, if you
want to.
How much does this tablespace grow each month?

I have a concerns. Periodically I must extend the tablespace PSAPLPS on
my
PRD system. I do this using BRTOOLS. Our database is stored on a storage
disk which has 200 GB free space, but in TxDB02 in the screen ?Memory
Management : Tablespaces? in column ?AutoExt (kb)? is displayed a value
which is larger with 50 GB than current size of this tablespace. This
means
that I can increase this tablespace only with 50 GB or I can use all
available disk space ( 200 GB ).
