Reply from LRKSVS on Jan 28 at 10:12 AM Generally, new Asset Class is required if the important parameters differ and you want certain values to be defaulted in the asset master automatically based on the asset class. For example, the useful life of the asset. As my knowledge goes, new asset classes are not required even though the number of computers increase many-fold as long as the parameters remain same. That means a single asset class can work for n number of computers. If you want to track computers like laptops, desktops, scanners, printers, etc., you may create separate classes accordingly. Generally the guiding principles for new asset classes is the characteristics of the asset and not the number of assets in the asset class.
Existing assets can be transferred from one class to another class using asset transfer transaction ABUMN.
The asset parameters like room number, serial number, cost center may help in tracking the computers to the class rooms.

WE created only a few computer asset classes, back in 2000, as we had about 400 computers in the district at that time. Now it is difficult to track, forecast replacement and identify each laptop in these classes.
We now have about 10,000 laptops and thousands of desktops etc etc
We barcode but need to define more types of computer equipment for analysis of usage, issues etc
My Question,
1.Can we just create new sub classes (same depr rate etc as the main class) and move the type of laptops etc it to the new asset subclass for better control?
2. How?
3. What is the best practice do deal with computer equipment nowadays
we write of computers (LVA) below $750.00 though but still track to the class rooms etc
Any ideas will help and appreciated. |
