Reply from Phil S on Mar 30 at 9:35 AM You can always apply a patch level to your JAVA systems while keeping the ABAP the same, but do not upgrade the component level itself to a higher level such as 7.4, that definitely will break something else.
You will have to be careful of dependencies as well, just like an ABAP system.

Subject: Portal Component SP Level / ECC SP Level
My current ECC SAP_BASIS Level is 7.31 SP8. My HR developer has identified a portal theme issue that SAP states can be resolved however the EP-RUNTIME and EP-BASIS SP levels must be at a minimum SP13. Is it ok to upgrade the Portal Components to SP13 while allowing the ECC SP levels to remain at SP8? Upgrading the ECC SP levels is not something that is planned anytime soon.
