Just some quick thoughts?..
I assume you have checked System Log (sm21 etc) to see if there is any further info, and checked that there were enough System Processes available at the time?
Is it just a single load which is being activated? How big is the load being activated/DSO - are there any space issues being reported to your BASIS Team??
Is the DSO being accessed maybe by a different Process Chain at 4am?
