If you want to avoid creating a custom BOR object, you might be able to use some combination of WAPI (workflow API) function modules to complete the work item. Go into SE37, type in "SAPWAPI*" and hit F4. You will see a rather long list of WAPI functions to choose from. I have never done what you are trying to do, but with a bit of elbow grease and some creativity I'm sure you can devise something that works.
