Dear;

If material is stock material than material number is mandatory in SAP but if material is consumable than material number is not mandatory instead a short description and material group becomes mandatory. So you can you stock material i.e. material with material numbers in one plant and consumable material in second plant.

Seeing as the Material Type (MARA-MTART) is in a one-to-one relationship with it's material number (MARA-MATNR), I'm not sure how you would assign the same material number to a different material type, even across business units.

If you think about it, "CEMENT" is not really the same based on how you describe it. One is clearly a raw material, which would probably be one material type (like "ZRAW"), and the other is finished product, which would definitely be a different material type like ("ZFIN").
