For hierarchies, don't you use the cost center/profit center groups? Or is it that your folks don't like the way the hierarchy expands?
Also, for the branding, I would use a writer instead of a painter, and make the column set the brands. If you need another brand, you add it to the column set. It should become another column without changing the report itself to accommodate it. Of course, eventually you'll run out of column width.
Yes, pivots are tough unless you have "Excel" stamped on the box!

I'm trying to determine how much is Report Painter and Report Writer used by other SAP customers. Our implementation partner says it is an old tool and not used much.
