I think I've found the answer now:
When I tried to run a Report Writer report with a large cost center hierarchy as column set, error message GR252 "Report contains more than 500 columns" appeared. This seems to be the limit. See also SAP note 336416 ("Due to technical reasons, Report Writer reports can contain a maximum of 500 columns." ).

Does anybody know how many columns a Report Painter or Report Writer report may have?
I read that there is a limitation, but there was no indication of what the limit is.
(We are on ECC 6.0, in case that matters.)
