Thanks all for your replies. To close this thread I wanted to say that SAP advised to use the expert mode and create report headers in the text for export functionality.
This works well but in reality if you can't control the format of the list/save/spreadsheet way then I don't see why it's there. Thanks again.

I do know that report titles can add in additional columns when they are not aligned with the data columns, could it be that ?
An additional (and obscure) problem will occur if description data in a report has been entered via a journal upload. If the description field contains Alt-<CR> to add additional line breaks within a cell in the excel upload, this will cause alignment problems due to unrecognized delimiters during export/import.
It does not sound like you have this problem as the effect of this will be to concatenate several columns into one but I thought I would mention it for the benefit of others who may also have have export alignment problems.
