Well it will depend on the size of the database. In my case we do a daily full backup of the database and we backup our transaction logs every 15 minutes. Then my system managers backup the servers (both application and database) plus move the SQL server back up from disk to tape daily. When backing up the database server they do not include the database files. For the database backup itself, you can create a maintenance job that will do many things for you besides backup the database. You can clean up 'old' backup files, you can 'update stats' and verify databases, etc. Or you can write a script. I keep two database backups on disk and a week's backups on tape. For transaction logs, I keep enough to cover the backup files in case of a restore. The duration of my SAP database backup is ~8 hours without any verifies or stat updates. I am at the point where I will next go to differential daily backups and a full once a week as 8 hours is the extreme limit I can take. Hop this helps
