Hi Completely agree with everything said below by Rajan. The asset is designed to meet accounting requirements - equipment in the plant maintenance module is, however, not. I'm not a PM expert by any stretch of the imagination, but fields like manufacturer, warranty etc are standard on PM equipment. You also have various statuses to indicate what the current position of the equipment is. The CS (customer service) component that is linked to PM may offer you some functionality to track equipment in the way you want. (You can also link an equipment master record to the asset master just for reference purposes.) Like I said, not my area of expertise but may be worth you posting your requirements in the PM forum. They are more in line with life cycle management at individual asset level. There are other 3rd party products that integrate with SAP FI-AA and meet your requirements like managing IT Assets. I would not even create a separate asset master record for each laptop since there is absolutely no value-add from an accounting perspective. The IT group would require such information, but SAP FI-AA is not the place. Just imagine, if the employee to whom the asset is assigned leaves the organization and the asset is re-assigned to someone else. Who would update that information in the asset master? Not the asset accountant. If you allow anyone else to change the master data, how would you ensure that person does not alter anything else that could have an impact on accounting? What if the information is not updated? Controls would get elaborate and messy. I would be very cautious in recommending solutions that do no fit into the designed process. That said, you could always use either existing fields or create additional fields to store additional information and that is what they will remain as - just information. SAP wouldn't know what to do with that information. If you can implement an appropriate procedure with adequate controls for updating the information that could change, you may be able to use the information. Otherwise, you would be contributing to a state of confusion the client could avoid by doing nothing in SAP. Bottom line - if you cannot have controls to ensure data validity, whatever data that is put in would be suspect, even if valid. Why try to fit a square peg into a round hole? Technical feasibility does not necessarily mean you could sustain the non existent process!
