Hi Keith

Thanks.

If we disabled the number range buffering is there any disadvantages ?

Where can I see this buffering ??

To explain to the Auditors, just show them the previous email :-)
This is standard SAP functionality and happens in all SAP systems unless
the document number range buffering has been disabled.
As for a report, I don't know of one, sorry. The only thing I can think
of is to use SE16 on table MKPF and look for the gaps.
Cheers

Ok, as you say you found it at the year end audit, could you please
clarify the problem? Is it:-
a) You posted a document which gave you a doc number but that doc
does not exist?
or
b) You have looked at the material docs at the year end and found
gaps in the numbering?
If it is a) then the problem will probably be caused by a failed update.

If it is b) then it is probably due to the buffering of the material
document number range. When allocating numbers to material documents,
instead of reading the database every time, the system reads e.g. 100
numbers into a buffer and updates the "last number used" to 100 more.
When documents are created it uses the numbers from the buffer until
they run out and then it reads another 100 etc. etc. If the system is
shut down without having used all the numbers in the buffer, when the
system restarts it uses the "last used" number stored in the database to
start the number allocation. This means that any numbers which were in
left the buffer at the time of the system shutdown will not appear in
the system i.e. they are lost. If your audit requires continuous
document numbers then the buffering of the material document number
range should be switched off.
Cheers

Did you get an Express Message when the doc was posted? Sometimes SAP
reports that the doc has been posted successfully but the actual
database update fails

Hi,
Did you check in Table MKPF/MSEG?. If your material document number is
not included in these two tables, then it does mean that your GR
document was not posted successfully.
Cheers,
HT
