MMAM is the SAP allowed way, with many hurdles to get past. The error messages from MMAM will tell you what is preventing the change.
Search "SAP Change Material Type" to find long threads on this subject. One on this forum ran from 2003-2011.
Unless you are ready to archive old objects, be prepared to create a new number. You can load consumption history into the new number and use where-used to find the BOMs, Routings/Task Lists and other places that would need to be updated.
