Question from sapnomad on Oct 20 at 11:43 AM I'm new to the concept of configurable materials/variant materials and need some help figuring out if the concept is a good fit for what I'm trying to achieve. Say I have two production lines that produce pens with customer logo. Production line A can accept any pen raw material from 3 suppliers. But Production line B can only accept the raw material from specifically one of the 3 suppliers. I have consolidated the demand for both production lines and will have MRP keep enough inventory from all 3 suppliers in a make-to-stock scenario. Production line A runs business as usual. My question is with Production line B. Here, we have our custom production scheduling system sending a pull signal to deliver raw material to line side. What I'm trying to achieve with the variant materials is having only one material master for the ROH pen. BUT I need inventory to be distinguished based on the supplier, so that Production line B will only look and pull from the specific supplier materials it needs. I'm guessing that I set a configurable material with the supplier as characteristic. And on the PO we can specify the supplier, or alternatively if material is applicable to Production Line B or not. But how does the inventory get tagged with this supplier characteristic? Does this need to get into the concept of batch management, and if yes, can you walk me through any pertinent details?
